Chongqing College of Finance and Economics is a full-time public higher vocational college established by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, registered with the Ministry of Education, supervised by the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce and the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Education, fully funded by the government, and authorized to confer associate degrees in higher education. The school was founded in 1956 as Jiangjin Special Zone Commercial Workers School to provide education and training for cadres. Full-time vocational education was introduced in 1974. In 1983, the school was renamed Chongqing Second Finance and Trade School. In 2007, it was upgraded to a higher vocational college and renamed Chongqing College of Finance and Economics, offering higher vocational education. The school is located in Yongchuan District, a major urban area of Chongqing and a key vocational education hub in western China. Covering an area of 710 acres, the campus is equipped with comprehensive teaching facilities and equipment. The library houses more than 1.1 million books. Currently, the school has over 12,700 full-time students. It also boasts a strong faculty, including 401 teachers with master's or doctoral degrees and 129 associate professors or professors.

The school currently comprises seven secondary colleges and offers 38 full-time vocational majors, including three undergraduate majors, two national-level backbone majors, three municipal-level backbone majors, and two provincial-level high-level professional groups. It has established a tiered professional-group development system, featuring the "Big Data and Accounting, Marketing" professional group as a leading group in western China, the "Financial Services and Management, Tourism Management" professional group as a distinctive Chongqing-focused group, and the "Customs and Foreign Trade Services, Computer Application Technology" professional group as a key school-level group, forming a development pattern characterized by "two leading, two distinctive, and two key" professional groups.
