Cultural and Creative Block, Yuzhong District

Once a thriving banknote printing factory during the Republic of China period, the site later declined for various reasons and gradually faded from public attention. After years of ups and downs, it has been revitalized with renewed energy and vitality, and has been transformed into the TESTBED 2 Cultural and Creative Park, integrating commerce, culture, dining, fashion, and creativity.

Will Alsop, Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), led the aLL Design team in redesigning and revitalizing the project, creating an integrated commercial, tourism, and cultural industry project rooted in the history and culture of Chongqing’s historic urban core and supported by innovative experiential commerce. The overall design emphasizes preserving original industrial heritage, renovating and upgrading spaces suitable for modern commercial operations, and introducing landmark projects in technology, culture, retail, and leisure and sightseeing to Yuzhong District, making the project a leading cultural and creative industry hub in Chongqing.

With the rise of short-video platforms, Chongqing has become an online sensation and a popular photo spot. This has also brought popularity to TESTBED 2 Cultural and Creative Park, turning it into a popular Instagrammable spot. The place was also a major filming location for the movie I Belonged to You. Its main setting, the CITYRADIO radio station, was actually a scene built on the rooftop of the E’ling No. 2 Printing Factory in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. Today, countless young people with an appreciation for art and culture visit the site every day to take photos and preserve their memories.
