Introduction to the plot of Chongqing 1949

Time:2026-07-30

Taking the eve of Chongqing's liberation in 1949 as the historical background, Chongqing 1949 tells a moving story where many CPC prisoners in the Zhazidong and Baigongguan concentration camps endured various tortures but upheld their revolutionary faith and would rather die than surrender. Taking this as the source plot, the play expands the narration to the whole Chongqing area.

On the eve of the dawn, the underground party of the Communist Party of China, patriotic and democratic figures, ordinary Chongqing citizens, and the People's Liberation Army who traveled day and night to the mountains, engaged in a fierce battle with the Kuomintang to defend the city of Chongqing. Under the time scene of meta-narrative, the play presents a novel and unique “Hongyan Classics” through a series of vivid portraits of revolutionary characters from a larger space-time dimension and a broader creative perspective. The play employs highly appealing artistic expression techniques to reproduce a magnificent and touching epic of The Red Revolution.

The creation of this play takes several years and involves a large amount of historical research and in-depth interviews. It avoids traditional creation pathways of similar themes and adopts instead the creative concept based on classics and committed to transcendence. Amidst unprecedented three-dimensional light and shadow, it reproduces the turbulent revolutionary years at an outstanding artistic level with milestone significance.

Chongqing 1949 focuses on the Ciqikou ancient town with three main storylines progressing simultaneously.

The first storyline is about the family affections, belief conflicts, and patriotism among the three brothers of the Lin’s family; The second storyline tells the plot of the CPC prisoners and democratic figures in the Zhazidong and Baigongguan Prisons, represented by Jin Xiu and Hong Jie, upheld their revolutionary faith and finally devoted their lives heroically; The third storyline presents how the underground party in Chongqing diligently recued comrades in Zhazidong and Baigongguan Prisons and meanwhile organizing resistance to protect important facilities in Chongqing City.

The three main storylines interweave in progressing, creating a unique and distinctive " Red Crag " story through a series of vivid characters, greater narrative rhythms and a grand dimension of time and space in production.
