Chongqing Apeng River National Wetland Park
Chongqing Apeng River National Wetland Park was approved for pilot development by the State Forestry Administration in 2009 and formally designated in August 2016.
The park brings together geological, hydrological and botanical features rarely found in one place and highly representative of southwestern China. Shengui Gorge winds through 27 bends and 28 narrow gateways, its U-shaped valley and serpentine channel forming a chain of sweeping S-curves. Nearby, three natural bridges rise approximately 100 meters above the underground Puhua River.
Other highlights include a three-kilometer subterranean river and the intermittent Sanchaoshui Spring, which erupts at regular intervals three times a day. The park also protects communities of Chinese witch hazel, a species characteristic of the Wujiang River basin and of considerable value to research on vegetation restoration in the fluctuating water-level zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir.
Within Qianjiang, the Apeng River cuts through successive mountain ranges, creating a dramatic landscape of deep valleys, opposing cliffs and branching tributaries. Its rugged terrain and winding waterways give the park its distinctive gorge scenery.
