Chongqing Library

Chongqing Library is located in Shapingba District, Chongqing, and is one of China’s large comprehensive public libraries. It serves as a major center for the collection, exchange, and public service of bibliographic resources in Chongqing. The library is recognized as a key national institution for the preservation of ancient books and a national first-class library.

The library traces its origins to 1947, when the central government during the Republic of China period established the National Roosevelt Library in honor of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s contributions to the World Anti-Fascist War. In April 1950, it was renamed the National Southwest People’s Library. In May 1955, three libraries — the former National Southwest People’s Library, the Chongqing Municipal Library, and the Beibei District Library — merged to form Chongqing Library. It received its current name in 1987, and the new library building officially opened to the public in June 2007.

Over 70 years of development, Chongqing Library now employs more than 240 staff members and holds a collection of over 4.6 million volumes and items. Its collection is especially notable for three areas: publications from the Republican period, traditional thread-bound ancient books, and United Nations materials. From its earliest days, the library has placed a strong emphasis on collecting, organizing, and researching local publications, building a comprehensive regional literature system that includes gazetteers, books, periodicals, genealogies, musical scores, calligraphy, and paintings from Chongqing and Sichuan.
