The Dazu Rock Carvings represent one of the finest achievements of ancient Chinese grotto art, with exceptional historical, artistic, and scientific value. In December 1999, they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The collections of Dazu Rock Carvings Museum consist mainly of two parts: the outdoor grotto temple sites represented by the “Five Mountains” of Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shimenshan, and Shizhuanshan, and the objects held in the museum’s collection storage.

The grotto temple sites include 75 protected heritage sites at various levels, more than 50,000 statues, and over 100,000 Chinese characters of inscriptions. The museum collection includes 673 sets of objects, comprising 6,489 individual items.

Dazu Rock Carvings Museum is currently the largest specialized museum of grotto temple art in China. Covering a land area of 6,500 square meters and a floor area of 18,000 square meters, the museum includes the 5,000-square-meter permanent exhibition Artistic Nirvana: Dazu Rock Carvings, a 360-degree dome-screen cinema, a fully equipped academic lecture hall, and visitor service facilities. It is a modern museum integrating exhibition, conservation, collection management, and visitor services.
