Wulong — South China Karst
Wulong lies at the junction of the Wuling and Daluo mountain ranges, in a folded mountain zone of deep hills and river valleys. Its landscape is often described in terms of “seven parts of mountains, one part of water, and two parts of farmland”: in other words, mountains and hills dominate the terrain, while rivers, valleys, and limited farmland are interwoven throughout the area. Karst landforms are especially prominent here.
The area is known for its striking mountains and clear waters. Reservoirs stretch across high mountain gorges, waterfalls plunge from sheer cliffs, streams flow through the landscape, and rivers run swiftly through deep valleys. Dense primary forests, open meadows, spectacular karst caves, dramatic sinkholes and fissures, and picturesque river valleys and gorges come together to create Wulong’s distinctive scenery — rugged, elegant, and dramatic.

Fairy Mountain Grassland
Wulong Karst Tourism Area is located in southeastern Chongqing, along the lower reaches of the Wujiang River, about 129 kilometers from central Chongqing. It has a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with clear vertical climate variation. The average annual temperature is 17.4°C, and the concentration of negative oxygen ions exceeds 5,000 per cubic centimeter.
The tourism area consists mainly of three parts: Three Natural Bridges, Fairy Mountain, and Furong Cave. With Wulong’s urban area as the hub, routes radiate outward to the major scenic areas. The area is a national tourist resort, a national ecological tourism demonstration area, and a China forest tourism demonstration area, and has been recognized as one of “China’s Forest Oxygen Bars.”
On June 27, 2007, Wulong Karst, represented by Three Natural Bridges, was inscribed on the World Heritage List as part of South China Karst, becoming China’s sixth World Natural Heritage Site. On July 6, 2011, Three Natural Bridges Scenic Area was rated a national 5A-level tourist attraction.
