Chongqing Science and Technology Museum

The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is one of Chongqing’s ten major social and cultural infrastructure projects designated by the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. It is a public institution directly affiliated with the Chongqing Association for Science and Technology.

Open to the public, the museum is a large, modern, comprehensive, and multifunctional venue for science education and public engagement. It serves as an important facility for promoting science and education in Chongqing and for improving public scientific literacy.
Located in the core area of Jiangbeizui CBD in Liangjiang New Area, the museum broke ground on January 7, 2006, and officially opened on September 9, 2009. It covers approximately 24,700 square meters of land, with a total floor area of 48,300 square meters. The total investment was RMB 567 million.
The exterior of the museum combines stone and glass. The stone façade uses overlapping blocks of different colors, suggesting the solidity of mountains. The glass curtain wall, which accounts for 60% of the exterior and covers nearly 10,000 square meters, is clear and transparent, suggesting water. Together, the angular stone and water-like glass express Chongqing’s character as a city of mountains and rivers.
The museum is divided into Area A and Area B. Area A reaches about 57 meters at its highest point and 24 meters at its lowest. Seen from above, it resembles a large fan-shaped crystal palace, giving the building a grand and impressive profile.
Inside the museum are six main exhibition halls: Everyday Life Science, Disaster Prevention Technology, Transportation Technology, Defense Technology, Space Technology, and Fundamental Science. In addition, there are two special exhibition halls: Children’s Science Park and Light of Industry.
The exhibits cover a wide range of fields, including materials, machinery, transportation, defense industry, aviation and aerospace, microelectronics, information and communications, computer applications, virtual reality, life sciences, environmental science, basic science, and ancient Chinese science and technology. The museum has more than 400 permanent exhibits.

Built to reflect Chongqing’s local character while meeting high national and international standards, Chongqing Science and Technology Museum provides public science education through exhibitions, scientific experiments, technology training, and other programs. The museum continues to improve and expand its functions, serving as a place where visitors can experience the appeal of science, explore innovative ideas, learn about scientific and technological achievements, and take part in public science education.
