Nanchuan Jinfo Mountain Scenic Area

Time:2026-06-11

Jinfo Mountain is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and a national 5A-rated tourist attraction. Covering 1,300 square kilometers, the scenic area has a highest peak of 2,238 meters. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List for its distinctive karst table-mountain landform. Known as the “Alps of the East,” Jinfo Mountain offers one of the finest snow and ice landscapes in southern China and some of Chongqing’s best conditions for summer retreats and wellness tourism.

Jinfo Mountain is also rich in biodiversity. A total of 8,085 species of plants and animals have been recorded, including 4,180 species of medicinal plants, making it a true “biological gene bank” and “Chinese medicinal plant treasury.” The mountain also has a long history of Buddhist culture and is widely known as an ancient site associated with Dipamkara Buddha.

Jinfo Mountain is a destination for all seasons.

In spring, visitors come for the alpine rhododendrons. Around 500,000 tree-form rhododendrons are scattered across the primeval forests of Jinfo Mountain, blooming in a brilliant sea of color. Covering the slopes and valleys, the flowers glow like flames, flow like red silk, and burn like morning clouds, turning spring into a magnificent mountain landscape.

In summer, Jinfo Mountain becomes a cool mountain retreat. With its highest peak at 2,238 meters and much of the scenic area around 1,000 meters above sea level, the mountain offers a refreshing escape from the heat. Far from urban pollution, it has negative oxygen ion levels of up to 100,000 per cubic centimeter, and its average temperature is more than 10°C lower than that of central Chongqing. It is an ideal place for summer leisure, wellness, and spiritual retreat.

In autumn, the forests turn into layered colors. From September, the trees and bamboo forests of Jinfo Mountain gradually change color, making the mountain look like a vast three-dimensional oil painting, rich in depth and vivid in tone. Square bamboo shoots begin to sprout in late August, and the local dishes made with them are seasonal delicacies not to be missed.

In winter, visitors can enjoy a rare snowfield in southern China. Snow can remain on Jinfo Mountain for more than three months, and the snowfields, rime ice, and frozen waterfalls are among its most admired winter sights. It is the closest destination to central Chongqing with some of the best snow conditions for snow viewing and skiing. The experience of “snow and ice on the mountain, warm hot springs below” offers visitors a striking contrast of winter cold and mountain warmth.
