Wulong Karst Tourism Area (Three Natural Bridges · Fairy Mountain · Furong Cave)

Fairy Mountain National Forest Park in Wulong, Chongqing, is a national geopark and national forest park. Located in the Wuling Mountains of eastern Chongqing, it rises to an elevation of 2,033 meters. The scenic area has 330,000 mu of forest, roughly equivalent to 31,000 standard football pitches, and 100,000 mu of natural grassland, roughly equivalent to 9,300 standard football pitches. With an average summer temperature of about 22°C, it is known for its distinctive alpine grasslands in southern China, rare snow-covered forest scenery in the south, and quiet, beautiful landscapes of forests and open meadows.

Fairy Mountain has been praised as the “Finest Pastureland in Southern China” and the “Switzerland of the East.” Its graceful forest-and-grassland scenery is highly distinctive within Chongqing. On June 27, 2007, Wulong Karst was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. On July 6, 2011, it was approved by the National Tourism Administration as a national 5A-rated scenic area.

Furong Cave in Wulong, Chongqing, is a large limestone cave. It was formed during the Quaternary Pleistocene, about 1.2 million years ago, and developed in ancient Cambrian dolomitic limestone. The temperature deep inside the cave remains stable at about 16.1°C.

The main cave of Furong Cave is 2,700 meters long, with a visitor route of 1,860 meters. The cave floor is generally more than 12 to 15 meters wide and reaches 69.5 meters at its widest point. The cave is usually 8 to 25 meters high, with a maximum height of 48.3 meters. The total floor area of the cave is 37,000 square meters. The most spectacular chamber, known as the Glorious Hall, covers 11,000 square meters.

Furong Cave is also known as one of the world’s great caves. On June 27, 2007, Wulong Karst was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. On July 6, 2011, it was approved by the National Tourism Administration as a national 5A-rated scenic area.
