Death Registration
For foreigners who decease in China, their relatives, guardians or agents shall, in accordance with relevant regulations, on the strength of the medical certificates of death, report their death to the exit/entry administrations of the public security organs under local people's governments at or above the county level to cancel their stay or residence permits.
(1) The aftermath of the death of a foreigner in China shall be handled by his or her employer if there is one; otherwise, the public security organs shall handle the matter together with relevant departments.
(2) If the death is due to natural causes, the family members, guardians, or agents of the deceased shall bring the deceased's passport and medical certificate of death to the exit-entry administration authorities of the public security organ of the local people's government at or above the county level to report the death and cancel the foreigner's stay/residence permit.
If the death is unnatural, the relevant person or the discoverer shall immediately report it to the public security organ. The criminal investigation department of the public security organ or the forensic doctor of the judicial organ shall determine the cause of death based on the results of the on-site investigation or autopsy and issue a relevant appraisal opinion. After applying for a medical certificates of death from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it shall be reported to the exit-entry administration authorities of the public security organ of the local people's government at or above the county level, and the foreigner's stay/residence permit shall be canceled.
(3) The handling of the bodies of foreigners who died in China should respect the wishes of the deceased's family or the embassy or consulate of their country in China. The bodies may be cremated locally or sent back to their home country.
If cremation is required, the deceased's family members, guardians, or agents should go to the funeral home with relevant certificates to go through the cremation procedures.
The transportation of corpses out of the country shall be handled by the family of the deceased or their authorized agents in accordance with relevant regulations of China through the local international corpse transportation carrier set up by the International Corpse Transportation Network Service Center of the China Funeral Association. When the coffin is transported out of China, it is necessary to hold a medical certificate of death or death appraisal, a certificate of embalming issued by the funeral parlor, and a coffin export permit issued by the health and epidemic prevention department.
