Ayi River Scenic Area is located in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, Chongqing. Among the Miao people, Jiao Ayi refers to a woman who brings happiness, health, and peace. The Ayi River takes its name from this expression.

The scenic area brings together mountains, rivers, forests, springs, and gorges, combining grandeur, wonder, adventure, beauty, and seclusion. It consists of three sightseeing areas: the Gorge Sightseeing Area, Walking Sightseeing Area, and Bamboo Raft Sightseeing Area; two leisure and resort areas: the Ethnic-Custom Leisure Resort Area at the Reception Center and the Niujiaozhai Ethnic-Custom Leisure Resort Area; two experience areas: the Rafting Experience Area and Outdoor Experience Area; as well as a Thrilling Rafting Area, a Specialty Goods Service Area, and a Cave Exploration Area.

The scenic area offers eight major visitor experiences: Listening to the Sounds of the Gorge, Singing on a Bamboo Raft, Playing in Emerald Pools, Riding the Rapids, Love in the Miao Village, the Sky Ladder, Qinglong Cave, and Qinglong Valley. Visitors can hike through the area to see rare flowers, unusual plants, ancient vines, and old trees; travel by boat to experience swift currents, challenging shoals, rolling waves, and clear green waters; or stay overnight in a mountain village to enjoy Miao cuisine and experience local ethnic traditions. It is a preferred destination for leisure sightseeing, folk-culture experiences, and water sports.

Ayi River Scenic Area has received a number of honors, including “Top Ten Emerging Brands in China’s Ethnic Cultural Tourism,” “Top Ten Golden Self-Drive Routes Showcasing the Beauty of China,” “Most Charming Scenic Area Brand of the Year” in the China Tourism Brand Ranking, “Top Ten Scenic Areas” under the Contribution Award for Influencing Chongqing Tourism Development, “New Twelve Scenic Wonders of Bayu,” “Safe Demonstration Scenic Area,” “Top Ten National Ecotourism Demonstration Scenic Areas,” “Top Ten National Cultural-Ecological Scenic Areas,” and “Study Tour Education Camp.”

It has also been recognized by the Chongqing Municipal Tourism Administration as a “Cool Summer Destination,” a “Trusted Scenic Area Brand for Consumers,” an “Honest and Credible Scenic Area,” “My Favorite Scenic Area in Chongqing,” and one of the “Most Beautiful Chongqing · Most Popular Scenic Areas of the Year.” On January 7, 2020, it was designated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a national 5A-rated tourist attraction.
