Yunyang Longgang Scenic Area

Longgang Scenic Area is located in Qingshui Tujia Township in southeastern Yunyang County, Chongqing. It borders Wanzhou District to the southwest, Lichuan City of Hubei Province to the south, and Fengjie County to the east. The scenic area extends from Hailuo Stream in Nixi Township in the west to the Shisun River in the east, and to the outlet of Huangling Gorge in the north. It is 37 kilometers long from north to south and 19 kilometers wide from east to west. The area covers all of Qingshui Tujia Township, Yaoling Township, Yanping Township, and parts of Piaocao Township and Nixi Township. It is about 68 kilometers from downtown Yunyang and 147 kilometers from central Chongqing.

Longgang Scenic Area covers 217 square kilometers, with a core scenic area of 17 square kilometers. It is an outstanding example of karst landforms, with sinkholes, stone pinnacles, peak clusters, caves, and underground rivers spread across the landscape. Its major attractions include Longgang Sinkhole, the Cloud Bridge, the Cliffside Walkway, Da’an Cave, Qishan Grassland, the Shisun River, and Qingshui Lake.
Longgang Sinkhole is an oval-shaped karst sinkhole, with a long axis of 304 to 326 meters, a short axis of 178 to 183 meters, and a depth of 335 meters. By depth, it ranks third in China and fifth in the world. Its inner walls are steep and sheer, with pines and cypresses growing from cracks in the cliffs and ancient vines hanging down the rock face. The bottom of the sinkhole stays green throughout the year, with birdsong echoing in all seasons. Because it resembles a huge natural stone vat and is associated with a beautiful legend about a woodcutter and a dragon maiden, it is known as Longgang, or “Dragon Vat,” and has been praised as “the greatest vat under heaven.”

The Cloud Bridge stands on a cliff 1,010.5 meters above sea level. It extends 26.68 meters outward from the cliff face, above a vertical drop of more than 700 meters. Designed in the shape of petals of a “flower in the sky,” the bridge has a three-layer high-strength glass floor. Walking on it gives visitors the sensation of stepping through the air, with panoramic views unfolding in every direction. Its cantilevered length exceeds that of the glass bridge at the Grand Canyon in Colorado, the United States, making it one of the world’s longest cantilevered glass skywalks and a signature landmark of the scenic area.

Dragon Cave covers 4,800 square meters and is 40 meters high. Inside the cave are vividly shaped formations resembling a dragon bed, a dragon throne, and other objects associated with the Dragon King. Other rock formations suggest images of a roaming dragon, a lion, an elephant, a phoenix, and many other forms, creating a cave landscape of striking variety.

Laozhaizi, or the Old Stockaded Village, includes attractions such as the Maiden’s Pool, Dragon Pillar, and White Dragon Cave. Before the Western Zhou dynasty (c. 1046–771 BCE), the area was already inhabited by local indigenous communities and was a hereditary territory of the Cong people. It was originally a place where the Cong people worshipped and offered sacrifices to a goddess. Later, the Dragon Pillar, a ritual pillar, was built here. Because of its long history, the place came to be known as Laozhaizi, or the Old Stockaded Village. From here, visitors can also enjoy natural sights with evocative names such as Golden Roc Spreading Its Wings, Divine Mist over the Long Gorge, Golden Buddha Light, Sunrise over the Seven Peaks, Sunset Glow like Molten Gold, Golden Monkeys Playing in the Forest, Reversed Gorge Waters, and White Cliff Hanging Cave.
