Simian Mountain Scenic Area is located in southern Jiangjin District, about a 1.5-hour drive from central Chongqing and about 50 minutes from downtown Jiangjin. It was rated a national 5A tourist attraction in 2015. Covering 213.37 square kilometers, the scenic area includes core attractions such as Homesick Terrace, Land Rock, Dragon Pond Lake, Red Sea Lake, and Pearl Lake. Its landscape is known for four distinctive features: unusual mountains, remarkable waters, red sandstone cliffs, and deep cultural heritage.

The scenic area has a forest coverage rate of up to 96%, with negative oxygen ion levels reaching 29,000 per cubic centimeter. It is home to nearly 2,600 species of rare plants and animals, including tree ferns, Chinese mergansers, and music frogs. Experts from the International Association for Ecology have praised it as a “natural species gene bank.”

Simian Mountain has eight lakes at elevations above 800 meters. It is also home to a rare group of high-mountain waterfalls, represented by Homesick Terrace Waterfall, known as the “highest waterfall in China.” With numerous waterfalls across the scenic area, Simian Mountain has earned the name “land of a thousand waterfalls.”

Thanks to its unique location and natural conditions, Simian Mountain preserves a rare geological combination of red Danxia cliffs, amphitheater-like enclosed valleys, and high-mountain waterfalls. The scenic area contains 107 geological heritage sites. The Danxia landform represented by Tudishen Rock is 376 meters long and 127 meters high. Known as the “No. 1 Sacred Rock in Asia,” it is considered to have outstanding value as a potential World Natural Heritage site.

Simian Mountain is also rich in cultural landscapes. These include love-themed sites represented by the Love Ladder and the “World’s Largest Heart,” the Huiqianyan cliff paintings associated with pre-Ba culture and dating back more than 5,000 years, Taoist cultural remains, Chaoyuan Temple known for the “World’s Most Extraordinary Couplet,” and Huilong Manor, regarded as one of the finest historic estates in southwest China. Together, these natural and cultural resources give Simian Mountain significant historical and cultural value.
