Since Chongqing became a centrally-administered municipality, bridge construction has advanced at remarkable speed. The number of bridges across the municipality has risen from just over 4,000 to more than 10,000. Chongqing currently has 14,267 highway, railway and urban bridges, including 11,101 highway bridges, 1,488 railway bridges and 1,678 urban bridges. Of these, 111 cross the municipality’s three major rivers: 42 span the Yangtze River, 38 the Jialing River and 31 the Wujiang River. The city’s bridges encompass all four major structural types: beam, arch, cable-stayed and suspension bridges. In recognition of the number, scale, technical sophistication, structural diversity and influence of its bridges, Chongqing was officially named China’s “Bridge Capital” at the 2005 annual meeting of the Mao Yi-sheng Bridge Committee.
